UK restaurant owner to customers: if you are allergic to black people, don’t come

LONDON: A note on the door of a local restaurant in UK has gone viral across the world.

Tired of customers turning away because of her colour, cafe owner and mother of three, Martha-Renee Kolleh in Leeds has put up a sign on her front door informing customers that she is a black woman, telling them "if you are allergic to Black people, don't come in".

The sign reads "Attention. Everyone be aware, I am a black woman, and always will be. If you are allergic to black people, don't come in."

"But I you prefer quality wholesome meals in a clean environment, come in. I don't bite," the note added.

The cafe, based in Ossett town centre, serves a mixture of British, African and Caribbean cuisine.

The note has taken the world by storm with the cafe's Facebook page inundated by anti-racial messages from across countries.

TOI went through the messages. One read "Hi, just read your request. It is disgusting and upsetting that you and your customers should have to waste a moment of your life, even thinking about posting a notice that you want to be free to live your life. I am white British and am no better than you or any other black person. I wish you well, have a good life".

A woman from Australia wrote "Wish I could make it all the way to West Yorkshire for some of that delicious barbeque".

A New York resident said "I am very sorry for the way you've been treated. I hope your sign turn things around for your cafe".

A man from LA said "If I ever get to England, this pasty white woman would love to come over for some barbeque. Wish you could open a restaurant here in Los Angeles. You would be embraced with open arms".

A person from Turkey said "Come to Istanbul, Martha-Renee, we would be queuing at your door to try your amazing sounding menu".

Ms Kolleh said she put the sign up following the way some customers reacted to her when they entered.

"They just open the door of my cafe and once they take a look at me they walk out," she said.
